Daily Five Math

I started Daily 5 Math stations during our math time. I teach a mini-lesson whole group and the students choose which station they would like to go to. I have only 3 stations open to start off. The stations the students choose from are math by myself, math with someone and number work. Below are pictures of the students at each place. We will work with these three stations for the next two weeks and then will add a listen to math station.

This student is completing math by myself. She has a bag with pattern cards and chips. She draws her card and makes her own pattern.

This student is completing number work. She has a dry erase board and a baggie filled with numbers. She is practicing writing her numbers.

These two students are doing math with someone. They are playing the game of "war" with cards. They both draw a card and hold it up. Whoever has the higher number gets to keep both cards in their pile!

This student is doing math by myself. She chose a bag with two sets of 10 cubes. The bag also has a set of addition cards with numbers 1-10 that have +1, +2 and +3 as well as ways to make 10. She uses the manipulatives to help solve the problem. In a few weeks I will change the cards to subtraction problems and then eventually there will be a mixture of addition and subtraction in the bags.

This student is completing patterns at math by myself.

This student is working on number work. He is using play-doh to make numbers.

Math with someone!

  1. Thank you for posting about Daily 5 math! I'm a kindergarten teacher who believes whole heartedly in Daily 5 literacy, but am having a hard time wrapping my head around the math. Perhaps it's because I don't have a book to guide me along. Do your students respond as well to Daily 5 math as they do to Daily 5 literacy? Do you have any suggestions as to how I should go about getting this up and running? Did you slowly start off with one category at a time like we do with Daily 5 literacy or did you begin with the three categories all together? Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! :) Melissa

  2. Hello there! Sorry for the delay in my response. I was trying to respond and for some reason my blog was freezing up each time I tried. Anyway....yes my students respond almost better to D5 math than they do D5 literacy. They do an amazing job with both, but I notice it's even quieter working during math!

To start off I introduced one activity at each choice "Math by Myself, Math with Someone and Number Work" over the course of a couple of days. I modeled just like D5 literacy and had students model good/poor choices. We also made I-charts. I had one activity per choice in the beginning and continue with mini-lessons in b/w each rotation. I would then use a mini-lesson from time to time to add another activity to a choice.

I absolutely LOVE using this and it works great for me to work with individuals or groups b/c my students are actively busy and not needing ME!

Please ask me any other questions...I'd love to help as best I can!

  3. I am starting a long-term kindergarten position and our school already does the Daily 5 for literacy, but they are trying to figure out how to incorporate work by yourself without doing worksheets. Do you have any ideas besides the word work?

    1. Hello! I guess I'm not sure what you mean? Daily 5 is all about independent work without worksheets. Each of the 5 choices has students working without using worksheets. Read to self uses their book boxes, work on writing can be journals or loose leaf paper (options are endless really), work work has several options with play-doh, magnetic letters, dry erase boards/markers...much more, listen to reading has a story on tape/cd and read to someone they again use their book boxes. Are you looking for more ideas to use/introduce in the word work station? Let me know and I'd love to share what we use!

    1. Hello!

We basically have just used the D5 reading format and create our own activities for each of the three choices. We are going to include a "Listen to Math" this year so we will have 4 choices. We've found it to be VERY easy to come up with activities related to the CCSS for the students to work on independently while we pull math groups. We also do math mini-lessons like we do in D5 math.

  5. I am your newest follower. I google searched for Daily 5 Math and your blog came up. I am struggling with finding time to do everything I want to do in math, so I am looking into Daily 5 to give the students more choice. I look forward to learning more.
