Insect Hunt!

Today we went on a hunt around the school to find bugs and insects. When we went outside we saw a lot of insects. A few of the bugs and insects we saw were butterflies, beetles, ants, a fire ant, ladybugs and a spider. The insect hunt was "AWESOME"!

Life Cycle of a Butterfly

We have been learning about all different types of bugs and insects this week. One type of insect we have focused on was the caterpillar/butterfly. We watched a video that showed us the complete life cycle of a monarch butterfly today. After reading several books, watching the video and researching other pictures of the different stages, we used noodles shaped like each stage and labeled them on a piece of paper!

Weekly Poem 5-4-2012

Here is the Sea
This week we really liked the poem. We had fun doing the motions with a partner, then performing them in front of the whole class. We liked the part when the sea's waves were moving and when the fish wiggled their tails!

What Makes an Insect an Insect?

Today we learned about bugs and insects. First we wrote down things we thought made up insects. Next we read a story called What Is an Insect? After reading the story, we completed our chart and wrote what we learned made an insect. We learned that an insect has 6 legs and 3 body parts! The body parts are the head, thorax and the abdomen.

Caterpillars AND Describing Words

During our writing time this week, we wrote sentences about caterpillars using describing words. We looked at pictures of different caterpillars here. A few words we used to describe the caterpillars were...hairy, spiky, poisonous, scary, fat, colorful, slippery, mean, gross and stripey. After we wrote the sentences, we put them on a caterpillar sentence strip.

10th Surfboard Award!

We earned our 10th surfboard for good behavior that was above and beyond what is normally expected from us yesterday. Mrs. Brown pulled our prize out of the mystery bag....we earned "Drink from a silly straw at lunch!" We were very excited to use our straws to drink our milk and we were sure to not throw them away after. We can't wait to use them again at home!

All About Clocks!

Today, we learned all about clocks. We learned what the two hands are called and what they do. They are called the "minute hand" and the "hour hand". The minute hand is bigger than the hour hand. If you put the minute hand on the 12 and the hour hand on the 3 the clock says it is 3 o'clock. If you put the minute hand on the 6 (which means 30) and the hour hand on the 4 the clock says 4:30. We used small "mini-clocks" to practice telling time. We thought the mini-clocks were fun to use!

Describing Words

We read a book all about BUGS and insects! The author did not write what the bug on each page was, he used describing words to tell us what the bug looked like. Some of our favorite describing words were...
  • Flutter
  • Fuzzy
  • Spotty
  • Spiky
  • Stripey
  • Scary
  • Colorful
