Our poem this week was the ABC's! The ending was a little different than the traditional song. We focused on touching each letter as we read it this week and trying not to move too fast or slow with our pointer.
We had 3rd grade guest readers in our classroom this week. All three of these students were my former kindergarten students who are now in the 3rd grade! We were very excited to hear how a 3rd grade reader sounds. We are beginning our journey as readers and it's wonderful to have my students hear older students reading!
We have been practicing on AB patterns this week during math time. Patterns is not one of our new common core standards, but is still an important part of kindergarten math curriculum. I was very impressed with how many of my students came in knowing patterns and caught on quickly to creating their own patterns. We created patterns as a class on the board and at their seats. We also created a pattern using every student in the class.
Can you guess what pattern we created??
It was a girl, boy, girl, boy, girl, boy.....pattern!
I took video of my class during Daily 5 today. Both videos shows students who have chosen Work on Writing or Read to Self. They are working very hard on both parts of Daily 5. I introduced Word Work today and it will be available as a choice next week. The class is very excited to get to have a third choice during Daily 5. I can already tell by having two choices how smoothly they are transitioning and how engaged each student is. I am excited to start working with small groups and one on one with students once all portions of Daily 5 are officially launched!
During math we are starting to review concepts from the previous week in whole and small groups. The activities in these groups will eventually be a choice during one of our Daily 5 Math options. Today's activity was a shape memory game. The class was split into groups and practiced matching shapes. This activity will be an option during Math with Someone.
