Week in Review--Dental Health

Reading:

In reading this week, we learning all about the strategy “Back Up and Reread”. Many times when reading a story, adults get to a point where they realize they do not understand what they are reading. Somewhere in their reading they lost concentration and therefore the meaning of the story. When this happens, as adults we realize we have lost comprehension and we stop and back-up, and reread. Children are no different than we are. They need to be taught the strategies good readers use to be successful. We have already practiced the comprehension strategy “Check for Understanding”. In learning this strategy, children are taught to stop throughout the story and ask “who” and “what”. Now your child is working on what to do when he/she is not able to answer the questions “who/what’. Using the strategy back up and re-read helps your child with their comprehension.

To kick off our learning of this week’s word families we watched a video that had us reading and learning new words that end with the -ell and -est sounds. We built words in both families, we went on a word hunt where we chopped the sounds up in the word and found it in a pile of other -ell or -est words and we practiced rhyming with all of the words in each family.

Our vocabulary words this week went with the book Little Critter Visits the Dentist. We loved learning all about the words dentist, braces, numb, x-ray, cavity and check-up.

Our new sight words: this, what

**Be sure to keep the white sight word cards from week to week and continue to practice all of them as new ones are sent home every week.

Our Poem of the Week:

iPad Fun:

Reading
  • Pebble Go/ChatterKid: For our first iPad round this week we learned all about the job of a dentist using Pebble Go. The knowledge that we learned, we then created a ChatterKid of a dentist explaining his/her job and/or talked about ways to keep our teeth healthy and clean. Once completing the assignment, we saved our stories and uploaded them to Google Classroom!
  • ABC Magnetic Alphabet: We used an app this week that is like a magnetic board. We used the app to build words that have H brothers in them.
  • Reading Eggs/QR Books: Third round all students completed lessons in Reading Eggs and/or listened to stories on “tape” using QR codes inside picture books.

Math
  • Book Creator: This week students used the app Book Creator on their own by adding a journal entry of the activity number of the day! We have been doing number of the day as a whole class since the first week of school and they are now experts and are able to do this on their own! They rolled a dice to find their number, wrote the number, the number word, drew the dice, tally marks, number of shapes and number line! They finished the activity by recording their voice explaining their thinking and what they did with the number of the day.
  • QR Code Number + Number Pieces: We scanned a QR code that told a specific number 1-20 and then opened up the app Number Pieces where we then built the number using ones and tens. We finished by writing the number to go along with the pieces.

Writing:

Writer’s Workshop this week, was continuing to work on our information writing. We are full swing into our planning pages, books and publishing them into Book Creator and Google Classroom. We also learned this week about adding labels to our pictures to help tell the reader more about our topic. We have been excited to share even more by using labels!

Math:

Math this week we learned all about the vocabulary terms more/less. We were introduced to this new vocabulary word and practiced all week by finding numbers that were more or less than other numbers. We specifically focused on one or two more or less, but did venture out to a few larger numbers as well. We learned a new Math with Someone game where we practiced this concept as well. The game is called BUMP, one player rolls a die and gets a number. They do not put their marker piece on that number though, they either put it on the spot that is one more or one less than that number. If their opponent already has a marker on that spot, they can “bump” them off! The first to have all of their pieces on the board wins!

Content:

This week was all about Penguins!
  • Monday--We read a small book and filled in the missing words about dental health.
  • Tuesday--We completed a healthy teeth illustration page.
  • Wednesday--We completed an unhealthy teeth illustration page.
  • Thursday--We labeled the parts of a tooth!
  • Friday--We brushed brown teeth with white paint to get them clean!

Social Emotional Learning (SEL):
Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.

This week’s SEL focus was continuing our learning about SELF-CONTROL. We learned that self-control means we are in charge of our own actions and how we respond and handle ourselves in different situations. We started the week off by reading a story called My Mouth is a Volcano. In this story a little boy has a hard time holding thoughts and stories in his head and he ends up shouting them out and interrupting anyone and everyone who he is around. His mom teaches him a strategy to help him to keep from blurting out and holding his thoughts until the appropriate time. We focused on the character in that story the rest of the week. We learned 5 other strategies we could use if we are struggling to keep our self-control in check. We finished the week off challenging yourself-control. I offered to the class to eat one Oreo cookie right then in the morning OR if they practiced their self-control they could have the cookie at the end of the day with a special surprise. There were a lot of students who just couldn’t wait and wanted to eat the cookie right in the morning, which was perfectly fine! But the students who were able to wait until the end of the day received TWO cookies instead of just one for practicing the sometimes difficult skill of self-control. It was a great week practicing our self-control!

A few discussion questions to talk with your child at home about this topic:
-What is a strategy you can use to help keep yourself in control?
-How would you feel if someone interrupted you or was not able to control themselves around you?
-What could you tell someone who is having a hard time with self-control that could help them?

EXTRA:
Our last Parent University was Thursday evening. We had a blast building a STEM based Valentine carrier for a box of candy conversation hearts. There were specific directions, constraints and materials that were allowed and all of the families did a GREAT job with this task! What fun!

PRACTICE AT HOME:
Have your child find one more or one less than a number! Challenge yourself and go above 20!

Next Week:
  • In reading we will focus on “Read With Expression”..
  • In writing we will continue to write Information Writing.
  • In math we will work on “Drawing 2D Shapes”
  • Our theme next week is all about Valentine’s Day. Be sure to send in Valentine’s completely put together and filled out. .
