Ocean Painting!

To finish off our study of Oceans, we read the story Fish Faces. This book was about how fish do not all look alike. Some fish have long, short, pointy or flat noses...fish have sad faces or mean faces...fish that have mouths that open wide, mouths like a tube or a beak...or fish with lines and stripes and waves! After reading the story we took a crayon and outlined a fish with different features and some background illustrations as well. Once we were finished outlining our pictures, we took watercolor paints and colored the outline in.

The finished products are hanging in the hallway on display!

What's that Commotion in the Ocean???

During our writing time today, we read the story Commotion in the Ocean. We read about sharks, sting rays, dolphins, crabs, lobsters and octopuses (among many others). We learned that turtles lay their eggs on dry land, the sting ray will sting any type of animal that comes near it and octopus will spray out ink if something is trying to get it.

After reading the story, we made a list of ocean animals we learned about. Then we went back to our seats and wrote our favorite ocean animal and why we like it using a real fact about the animal.

My favorite ocean animal is a piranha.                  My favorite ocean animal is a sting ray.
I like it because it sucks blood.                                         I like it because it stings.

Retelling a Familiar Story!

Today we read a story called There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Shell. Before we read the story, the students shared their thoughts on the book.

"I thought we were going to read a story about an old lady who swallowed stuff from the sea."

"I thought the shell would be the first thing she swallowed in the book."

"I thought she would be swallowing stuff in the book."

After reading the story, we cut pictures out of the things she swallowed and glued the old lady to the front of a pocket. Then, we listened to the story again and put our pictures in front of us and placed them in the pocket when she swallowed each item.

Finally, we found a partner and retold the story to each other by saying the first thing she swallowed all the way through the last thing she swallowed. We even had the old lady "BURP!" and a sandcastle came out with all of the things she swallowed!

Grouping Objects!

Our learning objective for math was "group sets of objects into 10's and 1's. We took a group of objects, counted out ten and then counted the ones that were left over. We then put ten plus how many ones were left and got our answer. We were able to tell the answer because we have been practicing decomposing numbers!

Mother's Day Presents!

On Friday, we made our mom's presents for Mother's Day. We wanted to make them a present to make them happy. All of our mom's loved the presents so much. We gave them paper flowers with coupons on the stem and personalized stationary so they can write us notes or a grocery list! The coupons said "Clean up your room!", "Give you a big hug!", "Help wash and dry the dishes!" and "Your choice! You pick the job!"
