Week in Review--Oceans!

Reading:

*We worked on the same strategy as last week! So the following is the same thing :).

Our CAFE strategy this week was focused on Retell a Story in Order or Sequencing. Sequencing is one of many skills that contributes to students' ability to comprehend what they read. Sequencing refers to the identification of the components of a story — the beginning, middle, and end — and also to the ability to retell the events within a given text in the order in which they occurred. The ability to sequence events in a text is a key comprehension strategy, especially for narrative texts. Sequencing is also an important component of problem-solving across subjects. We use sequencing in everyday life and introducing this skill to students helps aid in their comprehension and analyzing of a book.

As the school year ends we are taking down charts and other things we have made. Students got to pick from our charts to take one home!

**We have learned all of our sight words for the school year! Woo hoo!

**Be sure to keep the white sight word cards from week to week and continue to practice all of them as new ones are sent home every week.

Our Poem of the Week:

iPad Fun:

Reading
**We kept the same iPad assignments this week because last week we didn’t have a chance to get to all of the choices throughout the week.
  • Pebble Go/Pic Collage/Popplet: We watched a video about an animal of our choice this week on Pebble Go. We saved an image and wrote three facts we learned about that animal using either Pic Collage or Popplet. Students chose which one they wanted to use.
  • Switch Zoo/ChatterKid:: We tested out a new and super silly app this week called Switch Zoo. The app has a picture of an animal and allows the user to change various body parts to different animals. Students created their own fictional animal and screenshotted the image. After doing that, they opened the image into ChatterKid and zoomed in so they saw just the image of the animal. They recorded their own silly name and facts about the animal they created.
  • Reading Eggs/QR Books: Third round all students completed lessons in Reading Eggs and/or listened to stories on “tape” using QR codes inside picture books.

Math
  • Book Creator: This week students used the app Book Creator on their own by adding a journal entry of the activity number of the day! We have been doing number of the day as a whole class since the first week of school and they are now experts and are able to do this on their own! They rolled a dice to find their number, wrote the number, the number word, drew the dice, tally marks, number of shapes and number line! They finished the activity by recording their voice explaining their thinking and what they did with the number of the day.
  • Number Fight: We learned a new game this week that helped review our addition and subtraction facts. Number Fight is a game where you play against a partner and the first player to 10 points wins. If you get a problem incorrect, you lose a point!

Writing:

When we had writing this week, we focused on finishing up our lists and letters. One day we also wrote and completed a graduation craft. The students wrote one thing they learned in kindergarten. I just loved hearing the different ideas they had!

Math:

Math this week was focused on MONEY. We talked about the different types of coins and dollars that can be used. We looked at them and discussed what was printed on them and why those things are important and we learned how much each piece was worth. We also talked about how using 2 quarters is a quicker way to get to 50 cents versus 50 pennies and other scenarios similar to that.

Content:

This week was all about the Ocean and preparing for our Kindergarten Graduation Program!
  • Monday--We shared things we know about the ocean.
  • Tuesday--We created a writing and craft about something we learned in kindergarten. We also had two students from our class in the Talent Show!
  • Wednesday--We had our last behavior celebration of the school year! The Ronald McDonald House came and talked to us about leadership.
  • Thursday--We completed a fish craft and writing. We also had a fun celebration with a bounce house obstacle course!
  • Friday--Our kickball game was rained out so we started our Memories of Kindergarten Book!

We got to take home our greenhouses this week too! Several sprouted roots, stems and leaves! A few of ours didn't do much....YET!
