Week in Review--Thanksgiving!

Poem of the Week!

Writing:

-This week in writing we practiced editing sentences. We checked for capital letters at the beginning of the sentence.  We checked for punctuation at  the end of the sentence.

-We talked about 3 kinds of punctuation: period, exclamation p9oint, and question mark

-We reviewed how to make our writing easy to read.

-We made a list of the things we are thankful for by saying the word slowly and listening for all of the sounds.

-We had a teacher conference to review our lists and make sure all of the sounds we heard were written down.

-We used our lists to make a turkey that shows what we are thankful for

 

Math:

-In math this week we worked on writing the numbers from 0 to 20.  You will receive the practice page we did in class, so you can see which numbers you child needs to practice.  This is a 2^nd quarter skill and will be tested before break.

-All students received take home addition flashcards.  Please practice your flashcards at home to build up addition fluency.

 

 

Reading:

-There were no sight words this week.  Your child received “Lightning Words” as part of their homework for the short week.  Hopefully, they practiced the words 3 times. 

-We reviewed the word families “-at” and “-ot” this week.

-We continued working on putting letter sounds together to make CVC words.

-We talked about story elements with our Thanksgiving books: characters, setting, and plot (beginning, middle, end)

 

-The CAFÉ strategies we worked on this week were

“Story Elements”

“Relating a Book to Yourself”

How can you help your child with the strategies at home?

1. Keep talking about the story elements as you share stories at home.

2. Ask you child how the book you read reminds them of his/herself.  Connecting to text will help with comprehension

 

 

Content:

-This week we talked more about the first Thanksgiving.

-We finished our Pilgrim and Native American craft.

-We celebrated the awards out turkeys won.

-We made an “What am I Thankful For??” turkey.

 

 

 

Next week:

 

In writing we will be talking about what gets a capital letter and introduce a new writing checklist.

 

In math, we will be practicing writing numbers from 0 to 20 and drawing 2D shapes.

 

In reading, we will focus on summarizing and comparing and contrasting different gingerbread stories.

 

Our theme next week will be gingerbread.

Week in Review--Bats

Poem of the week!

 



Reading:

-Our sight words this week was the word “what” and “you”! 

-Please remember to practice your sight word flashcards each day as part of your homework. Students will be tested on the sight words again before the end of 2^nd quarter.

-We worked this week on the word family –at.  We generated words that belong in the –at family.  We talked about how the words in the family all rhyme.

-We also worked on blending parts of a word (onset/rhyme) together to help us get ready for word families.

-We talked about visualization and practiced finding parts of our read aloud that we could picture in our heads

 -The CAFÉ strategies we worked on this week were

“Making a mental image”

“Setting”

 

How can you help your child with the strategies at home?

1. Talk about places in your books where the author uses words to help the reader make a picture in their head.

2. Practice rhyming words.  Ask your child to produce a rhyming word for a word you give them.

3. Quiz your child to see if they can tell you what the words character, setting, author, and illustrator mean.

Writing:

-This week in writing we focused on adding details to our pictures.

- We also talked about publishing our work and chose a piece from our journals to hang up

-We talked about editing and looking for mistake in our writing. 

-We worked on capitalization and punctuation in writing.

-We reviewed setting and introduced a new writing activity that focuses on the setting

Math:

-In math this week we extended our knowledge of different ways to make the numbers 1 through 5 using number bonds and number bracelets

-We changed our number combinations into addition problems

-We introduced a new “Math by Myself” activity- sorting by shape (2D)

-We learned a new math game Number War that then went into “Math with Someone”  This game allows us to practice number recognition using numbers, numbers in word form, tally, marks, ten frames, and items in a set

-We practiced recognizing numbers 1-25 using flashcards each time we lined up to go to specials.

Content:

-This week we talked more about nocturnal animals, this week the subject was bats

-We reviewed sequencing with a story about a bat

-We made a KWL chart about bats-  What we KNOW, what we WANT TO KNOW, what we LEARNED

-We compared and contrasted bats and owls using a Venn diagram

-We made bats that had the facts we learned on each wing.













Other:

IPADS

-Our ipads continue to be a great tool for our Daily Café time!  A new app was introduced this week that allows students to practice writing letters and reviews letter sounds. Did you know students can work on the Raz Kids reading program at home?

PBIS
-We celebrated good behavior in grades K-5 for the past month with an hour of fun going through the Boot Camp Challenge obstacle course. The students who had 85% or higher good behavior for the past month were able to go to the celebration and had a blast climbing, jumping and racing!

Next week:

 

--In writing we will be working on how to make piece of writing easy to read:  handwriting and word spacing.

--In math, we will introduce ways to solve addition problems: flash cards, manipulatives, number lines.

--In reading, we will focus on responding to questions about stories and review sequencing.

--Our theme next week will be Pilgrims and Native Americans.

Week in Review--Owls!

Poem of the week!

 

 

Writing:

-This week in writing we focused on true stories by writing and illustrating 3 page books.

- We focused on a different part of the story for each page:  Who?  Where? What is happening?

-We continued to work on writing middle sounds in words when we added the writing to each page of our books.

Reading:

-Our sight words this week was the word “with” and “my”! 

-Please remember to practice your sight word flashcards each day as part of your homework. This week my was frequently confused with me.

-We continued our word work this week in class picking out the 2 words that rhyme.  We also practiced listening to see if two given words had same beginning sound or the same ending sound. 

-We also worked on blending parts of a word (onset/rhyme) together to help us get ready for word families.

-The CAFÉ strategies we worked on this week were

“Retell a story in order”

“Comparing and contrasting”

How can you help your child with the strategies at home?

1. Encourage your child to retell you a story including the characters—focus on the beginning, middle, and end

2. While reading together, talk about the characters.  How are they alike?  How are they different?  If there is only one character, compare and contrast that character to your child or a character from another book.

IPADS

-Our ipads are up and running!  The apps we used this week were Raz-Kids, QR readers, and ABC Magic.  These apps allowed use to read to self, listen to books on the ipad, and practice beginning letter sounds.  Despite on or two technical issues we had a successful week using our new technology.

Math:

-In math this week we talked about different ways to make the numbers 1 through 5 using “The Story of…”

-We manipulated chips into different combinations that equaled the number of the day.

-We “read” our examples like a sentence---

  3 and 2 make 5,  4 and 1 make 5, 0 and 5 make 5

-We reviewed 3D shapes and sorted pictures of real world items that are those shapes during morning meeting

-We practiced recognizing numbers 1-25 using flashcards each time we lined up to go to specials.

Content:

-This week we talked about nocturnal animals, specifically owls.

-We reviewed text features with a Weekly Reader about owls

-We labeled the body parts of an owl on a diagram.

-We made owl puppets that gave facts about owls using “Owls can…”  “Owls have…” and “Owls are…” sentence starters.

-We read several owl books this week.  Skills we focused on using those books were the character’s feelings, comparing and contrasting, and predicting.

Next week:

--In writing we will be working on adding detail to our pictures and choosing pieces to publish.  We will also star working on editing a piece of writing.

 

--In math, we will extend our knowledge different ways to make the number 1-5 using number bonds and addition number sentences.

 

--In reading, we will focus on making a mental picture in our head.  We will also start word families.

 

--Our theme next week will continue to be nocturnal animals, specifically bats.
