Week in Review--Fairy Tales

 

Reading:

-Our sight words this week were the words “in” and “it”! 

-Please remember to practice your sight word flashcards each day as part of your homework.

-We worked this week on counting syllables in words this week.  Say the word, count the syllables.

-We  talked about the main idea of a book and details in the book that support the main idea

 

-The CAFÉ strategy we worked on this week was

“Main idea and Supporting details”

How can you help your child with the strategies at home?

 

Talk with your child about the main idea of the stories you read.  “What was this book mainly about?”   Then talk about the details that support that idea. 

For fiction books, that means talking about what happened in the beginning, middle, and end of the story.  For informational text, that means what facts or information was given about the topic of the book.

 

 

Writing:

-This week in writing we worked on our own “How to…” books

-We learned about topic sentences that tell the reader what our book is about

-We wrote our own topic sentences

-We used our plans to write our own “How to…” books and added illustrations

 

Math:

-In math we learned started decomposing numbers 11-19

-We talked about making numbers using 10s and 1s

-We made the numbers 11-19 using ten frames

-We used number bonds to decompose numbers into tens and ones

-We practiced counting on from a given number

 

 

Content:

-This week our theme was fairy tales

-We read several fairytale books and watched some fairy tales during rest time

- We talked about the formula for a fairy tale and planned out our own

-We started our fairytale project- telling a story with a picture.

-We dressed up like fairy tale characters and superheroes on Friday!

 

 

 

Week in Review--Polar Animals Cont.

Reading:

-Our sight words this week were the words “will” and “be”! 

-Please remember to practice your sight word flashcards each day as part of your homework.

-We continued working this week on the H brothers (th, wh, sh, ch, ph)

-We had 2 new word families this week  -ig and -og

-We  learned about the reason’s authors write: Author’s Purpose (persuade, inform, entertain)

 

-The CAFÉ strategies we worked on this week were

“Check for Understanding- nonfiction/informational”

How can you help your child with the strategies at home?

1. Work some nonfiction or informational books into your reading time at home.  Find a topic your child is interested in and ask them what they already know about that topic.  Read together to see if their prior knowledge is in the book and see what other fun things you can learn

 

2. Talk about why the books you read together have been written.   Entertain (for fun), Inform (to teach you something), Persuade (to convince you of something)

Math:

-In math we reviewed 3D shapes

-We worked on “The Story of…” for numbers 6-9

-We worked on counting on from a given number

Writing:

-This week in writing we made a class “How to” book.

-We brainstormed the steps we follow to brush our teeth

-We talked about transition words to move from one page to the next—first, next, then, last

-We made a plan for a 4 page book. 

-Mrs. Stevens made the pages of the book and left out some of the sight words and H brother sounds..

-We illustrated the book all on our own

-We made a title page for “How to Brush Your Teeth”  So cool!

 

 

Content:

-This week our theme continued to be polar animals- specifically, penguins

-We read several informational books and fun stories about penguins

- We predicted what it would be like to be a penguin

-We learned about penguins from an educational website called Core Clicks

-We used the information we leaned to write a class poem

-We made penguins to go with our poem

 

 

RAZ-KIDS

Many of the students are changing levels on Raz-Kids!  This is so exciting!  The program reads the book to your child, then your child reads it on their own.  After you get past the beginning level, the books even have questions to check for understanding.  You can use this app at home, and the app will read the questions and answer choices to your child.  Just grab some headphones and try it out!

 

PEBBLE GO

Have you tried Pebble Go yet?  We used it on Onday to learn about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Poem of the Week!

Reading:

-Our sight words this week were the words “find” and “this”! 

-Please remember to practice your sight word flashcards each day as part of your homework.

-We worked this week on the H brothers (th, wh, sh, ch, ph)

-We reviewed sounding out words and word families.  Then we started practicing words that rhyme

-We  practiced stopping while we were reading to check for understanding

-We talked about prior knowledge- what we already know about a topic

 -The CAFÉ strategies we worked on this week were

How can you help your child with the strategies at home?

 

1. Stop periodically as you read with your child.  Ask questions about the book and the characters.  Ask questions like “Why do you think the character did that?”  “What choice did the character make in the story?  Was it a good choice?  Why?”

 

2. Talk about topics.  Ask your child to tell you 3-5 things they know about the topic.  Read a book or get on Pebble Go to learn some new information.

Writing:

-This week in writing we talked about writing to give information

-We reviewed the vowels and their sounds 

-We worked on adding the middle vowel sound to CVC words

-We told a personal experience story by adding the final word to each sentence and the ending punctuation.

-We also added some new words to our word wall!

-We made a chart about polar bears and used the ideas to write about our polar bear pals

Content:

-This week our theme was snow and polar animals

-We talked about our prior knowledge about snow and then read a book to see if our facts were in there

- We read an informational text about polar animals and made a web

-We made a chart about polar bears and added more information to it from Pebble Go

-We made polar bear pals

AWARDS

Congratulations to the students who won awards at the 2^nd quarter award assembly Friday morning.

Math:

-In math we reviewed sorting by color and shape and then went on to sort by size

-We worked on comparing numbers to identify which one was larger

-We worked on counting on from a given number

-Reviewed patterns and made an A, A, B, B pattern during calendar time

 

PEBBLE GO

--The teachers were shown a really cool, informational website before winter break called Pebble Go.  We used it this week to learn more about polar bears.

 --A paper was sent home on Friday that had the login and password for all Mayflower Mill families.  You can use this at home and it will even read to your kindergartener!  Check it out.
