Week in Review--Fairy Tales

Reading:

In reading this week, we reviewed one of our report card skills and favorite reading strategies “Main Idea and Key Details”. Identifying and understanding main ideas along with determining importance are prerequisite skills to summarizing text. Readers summarize the most important aspects of the text by determining the details that are significant and discarding those that are not, and state the main idea in their own words, thus improving comprehension.

To kick off our learning of this week’s word families we watched a video that had us reading and learning new words that end with the -ake and -ate sounds. We built words in both families and to review both word families we watched a Google Slide that showed a picture that fit one of the of the word families and then wrote the word on our iPad. The next slide showed how to spell the word and we checked our answers. It was so much fun! We love doing this activity!

Our vocabulary words this week went with the book The Little Red Hen  We loved learning all about the words sigh, doubt, delight, fable, delicious, admired.

Our new sight words: get, of

**Be sure to keep the white sight word cards from week to week and continue to practice all of them as new ones are sent home every week.

Our Poem of the Week:

iPad Fun:

Reading
  • Princess Fairy Tale Maker: We tried this new app this week and loved it! It is very similar in format to one of our favorite apps, Draw and Tell. However, in the photo gallery there were options to choose from that looked like scenes from real fairy tales! The options ranged from castles, to ballrooms and even a pirate ship. We used stickers to add characters and the pen tool for any extra illustrations we wanted in our story. We recorded our very own fairy tale, moving the stickers around and making up our own story!
  • Starfall Learn to Read:: We enjoyed practicing, reading, spelling and matching words with short and long vowels, as well as words with other vowel pairs this week. What a fun app to play and learn at the same time!
  • Reading Eggs/QR Books: Third round all students completed lessons in Reading Eggs and/or listened to stories on “tape” using QR codes inside picture books.

A few examples of our fairy tale stories on the iPad!

Math
  • Book Creator: This week students used the app Book Creator on their own by adding a journal entry of the activity number of the day! We have been doing number of the day as a whole class since the first week of school and they are now experts and are able to do this on their own! They rolled a dice to find their number, wrote the number, the number word, drew the dice, tally marks, number of shapes and number line! They finished the activity by recording their voice explaining their thinking and what they did with the number of the day.
  • Math Slide: We continued to practice and learn our  two new math apps this week that had the students practicing addition, subtraction, tens and ones and subitizing. It was a fun game!

Writing:

Writer’s Workshop this week, we finished up our information writing unit. We took our post-test and did such a great job writing our topic, three facts and a feeling ending. We then went on with the week by creating our very own class fairy tale story. We started with a planning page called “Fairy Tale Formula”. We put all of our ideas out on the paper and then the next day we chose certain ideas from each topic. We finished the week by putting those ideas together in a story and illustrated the story together!

Math:

Math this week we learned all about the vocabulary term columns and rows. We learned the difference between the two words and how they are used in our daily life in our classroom and in graphs! We continued the week by learning about the different types of graphs and the parts of a graph. We created a class bar graph using the app Pic Collage and shared our favorite fruit. We also completed a class pictograph together deciding our favorite fairy tale book between four choices. We finished the week off by completing a graph on our own by going around the room, gathering data and creating a graph! We had the best discussions after each graph lesson. We practiced reading and comparing and contrasting the data of each graph.

Content:

This week was all about Fairy Tales!
  • Monday--We read the story The Three Little Pigs.
  • Tuesday--After reading the story the day before, we took one of our favorite characters, the big bad wolf, and changed his famous line to make it our own! We used the app ChatterKid to record our line. We even wrote our name and added a sticker to the picture to make it even more our own!
  • Wednesday--We completed a guided drawing of a large castle and outlined it with crayon.
  • Thursday--We used our water color paints to paint our castle from the day before.
  • Friday--We enjoyed our Fairy Tale Ball in the morning and had so much fun dressing up, dancing and sharing what we have learned this week. In the afternoon we used the app iMovie to create a Fairy Tale movie trailer. Be sure to check it out below! It was so much fun to make together as a class!

The Princesses & Superheroes of Room 26

We finished our learning all about Fairy Tales by creating a movie trailer for a fairy tale starring no other, than the students in our classroom! Watch it below, we are very proud of it!

Social Emotional Learning (SEL):
Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.

This week’s SEL focus was learning about TEAMWORK. We started off our discussions on this topic by watching a video from wedolisten.org and one of our favorite characters Howard B. Wigglebottom. In this video Howard thinks he is the best on his team and does not want to share and gets frustrated if they lose or when the coach takes him out of the game for his poor sportsmanship. Howard learns that being part of a team means he you have to work together and you might not always win, but it is important to be a good sport. We practiced teamwork later in the week by trying to keep a seat cushion between one person and their partner, while walking from one area of the room to the other. We learned that we needed to use teamwork and work together in order for the cushion to not fall. We also read the story Three Hens and a Peacock this week. We were able to relate to how the animals on the farm have different jobs, but all work as a team to make the farm run smoothly. If one or more of the animals do not do their job, the farm suffers. We realized it was just like our classroom! We might not all be doing the exact same thing all of the time, but we know that everyone has to do what is expected of them and complete their jobs in order for our classroom to run smoothly just like the farm. If someone is not following their job, the class might suffer. We will continue learning about teamwork next week!

A few discussion questions to talk with your child at home about this topic:
-How does it feel to be part of a team?
-What does it feel like when your team wins?
-What does it feel like when your team loses?

PRACTICE AT HOME:

Watch our classroom movie trailer and have your child tell you about how we made it using iMovie!
