Poem of the week!
Reading:
-Our
sight words this week were the words “how”
and “is”!
-Please
remember to practice your sight word flashcards each day as part of your
homework.
-We
worked this week on the word family –ap.
We generated words that belong in the –ap family. There were a lot!
-We
also worked on sounding out unfamiliar CVC words
-We continued to work on responding to questions
about a story
-We
talked about summarizing the plot of a book
-The
CAFÉ strategies we worked on this week were
“Responding
to Questions
“Summarizing”
How can
you help your child with the strategies at home?
2. Ask you child what happened at the beginning of the story. Continue to talk about the story by asking “Then what?” This will help with summarizing and the sequence of events.
Writing:
-This
week in writing we focused on what words need to be capitalized when we write out
CVC words to connect the writing to the work we are doing with word families
-We
looked at a page from Mrs. Stevens’s book and added a second sentence to the
page to give more detail.
-We
got a new Writer’s Checklist to use to check our writing.
-We
used our new checklist to correct pages that our classmates have written
-We
started a new 3 page book!
Math:
-In
math this week we worked on writing the numbers 0-20. Each student practiced the numbers that they
were having difficulty forming correctly
-We
played Number War (Math with Someone) which allows us to practice reading
numbers in different forms and compare them to determine which one is larger
-We
worked on drawing 2D shapes. Students
will be practicing drawing 2D shapes in a new “Math by Myself” station next
week
-We
reviewed 3D shapes
ELF ON THE SHELF
-Our elf arrived on Monday. We read the story of Elf on the Shelf and
named our elf Chippy. He is watching our
class carefully every day. He seems to
enjoy being up high where he can see everything.
Content:
-This
week our theme was gingerbread.
-We
read various versions of the Gingerbread Man story pilgrim to life today.
-We
made gingerbread people with our own story ideas.
-We
made gingerbread headbands with patterns made out of candy.
Other:
Every year we have a special store in our school around the holidays called "The Penguin Patch". This store has items at a ridiculously reduced price for students to bring money to purchase gifts for friends and family. We just love everything about this store! The best part is seeing their little faces light up with excitement to choose a gift for someone special and purchasing it on their own just like a grown up!
Next
week:
--In writing we will be reviewing vowel sounds and
adding the middle vowel sound to words.
--In math, we will be reviewing addition and shapes.
--In reading, we will focus on relating stories to
ourselves and compare and contrast.
--Our theme next week will be Christmas
--Friday is Grinch Day!!! Wear green to school.
