Work on Writing!
Today I launched the Work on Writing portion of Daily 5. I have to admit I was a little nervous to do this knowing most of my students are not familiar with writing the letters of the alphabet and having them get started on writing independently in the second week of school! We started by creating our I-Chart for Work on Writing. The class came up with what they thought their job would be during writing. We did this by thinking about their job during Read to Self and put it in writing terms. I then modeled how to draw a picture using an idea and shapes. I also modeled where to go in the room for Work on Writing. The students have a few options. They can either go back to their seats and use the crayons/colored pencils there or grab four crayons, a pencil and a clipboard and find a spot in the room. Each student had one sheet of writing paper to practice today. Eventually we will work on writing in our journals. I hope to start the journals sometime next week. We charted our stamina for two rounds today. We first made it a minute and a half and our second round we made it to 4 minutes.

Gosh - I'm so excited to read about your progress. 1st day for us is next week, and the week, or so, head start you have on us provides me an excellent model (or at least some things to be thinking about). When you were practicing Read to Self - what kinds of things would you teach/do during your whole group time?
ReplyDeleteSo happy to have found your blog. We are in workshops this week and will begin school in Sept. I have moved from gr.1 to K and can't be more excited to reach the youngest learners! I am a fan of Daily 5 and the CAFE; reading your post encourages me to start both in week #1!
ReplyDeleteYes! Starting week one is very easy to do with K kids. You just have to make yourself take the leap and dive into it. To start Read 2 Self, I began by modeling 3 ways to read a book. Read the words, read the pictures and retell the story. K students do a wondeful job with reading the pictures. Any of the NO DAVID books are great b/c there aren't very many words. I then modeled a good way to do read 2 self and modeled a not so good way. I then had kids model both! Try and pick the couple of students who you can already tell would be great at modeling the not so good way and have them model it and then the correct way. They will love the chance to behave poorly with the books and then prove to you they can do it right! Let me know if that helps and any other questions! =)

ReplyDeleteThank you! To start off the first week of school I put books in the book boxes. During the second week I taught the "good fit book" lesson and they shopped for books to fill their boxes. I am hoping to have the students shop for books once every week!
