CAFE Strategy

I introduced a new CAFE strategy today called "Tune in to interesting words." We read the story The Windy Day. After reading a page I would ask the class if they heard any interesting words. We made a list of these words on a chart. We are going to continue to add to this list every time we read a story or when the student's are reading their own stories and come across interesting words. We discussed what makes a word interesting and how we can also add these new words to our writings!

  1. I've just read through all of your entries! They are so interesting - especially those relating to Daily 5/Cafe. I've taught for 33 years - all but 6 in first grade and for the past two I've been changing my literacy block to implement Daily 5 and CAFE. Your entries are so helpful - very clear explanation of how simple yet effective this is for even the youngest readers! Can't wait to hear more from you this year! Thanks:) Mrs. Karyn Dieffenderfer - Syracuse, NY

    1. Thank you! My entire K-5 school has implemented Daily 5 and we have seen nothing but amazing results. Us K teachers were a little worried at first using this in K, but once the skills/procedures are taught the kids just do an amazing job! They are completely capable and its been beyond refreshing not having to create centers every week and being able to focus on my strategy groups and conferring!

Good luck! I would love to hear how it is going for you! =)
